While the nightmare that cancer represents is still alive in our country, there are several sources that are making inroads in this battle. Even certain industrial businesses participate in cancer fundraising as a gesture of good will and intentions. The U.S. Cancer Institute, the principal one of twenty-seven related government agencies submits a budget to Congress each year for cancer research funds. The usual grant is about $4.8 billion. Its Cancer Research Fundraising funds go towards studying the causes, prevention, detection, diagnosis and treatment of various forms of cancer. The American Cancer Society has 3,400 offices across the country. This agency uses its Cancer Research Fundraising funds to study cancer prevention, cancer risks, and to track the current cancer statistics. With over $755 million in program services including research and education, the Society also allocates another $289 million in supporting services such as patient advocacy. And who can forget St Jude Hospital program? Danny Thomas made fundraising for this institution popular many years ago, and the work continues today with Marlo Thomas as a spokesperson. St Jude Hospital focuses on the research and treatment of pediatric cancer. Cancer Research Fundraising is essential to their ongoing battle against this hideous disease that randomly attacks even innocent children. While there are many different agencies attacking cancer today primarily through research, there is still much work to do. Significant progress has been made with some types of cancer, but finding proper treatment and cure for others has remained elusive. While government funding does and should continue, the more businesses and industry gets involved, the sooner we will have more answers and solutions. Undoubtedly, private donations from caring people have made a huge difference as well. Given with love by people who have wrestled with cancer themselves or in their families and by those who give voluntarily to cancer projects purely from a desire to make this world a better place for everyone, the day will come when cancer is no longer the feared enemy of our society.
